The Benefits of Minimally Invasive Dentistry

Your Federal Way Dentist, Dr. Barbara Billings, is committed to providing minimally invasive restorations (starting as early as possible in life) to prevent most future dental problems.

Historically, there was a drill and fill protocol. When there was tooth decay, drills were used to remove decay and to remove tooth structure to provide an access for the structural demands of the filling material. With conventional amalgam (mercury/silver fillings) usually a large amount of tooth structure was removed. Often, large fillings lead to cracked teeth that required crowns that covered the whole tooth.

Today, with white composite material, pits of decay can be removed and filled with flowable material that can be bonded to the healthy tooth structure. Grooves of the teeth can be sealed at the same time and often no further treatment is necessary.

We look forward to seeing you, and treating your dental needs with a minimally invasive approach.
