Dr. Barbara Billings – Federal Way Dentist
It was after teaching at Thomas Jefferson High School for seven years that I decided to return to school to pursue a career in dentistry. I have been practicing for more than 25 years and am honored to be part of the dental community.
The treatment environment established for my patients is friendly, welcoming, warm, and comfortable. A trip to the dentist is often fraught with anxiety for many people. My staff is motivated to do everything necessary to eliminate cause for stress or worry on the part of those who enter our office. That starts with being good listeners, sensitive to the concerns, needs, and wishes of those we treat. It continues with providing honest, useful information and options regarding potential treatments. It ends with our team following up with lots of questions.
We encourage our patients to be comfortable participating in making decisions about their dental needs. We seize every opportunity to educate them and their families about issues such as the relationship of periodontal disease to conditions like diabetes and heart disease, the role of nutrition and diet, and the long-term benefits of prevention. The right lifestyle choices and daily practice pay heartily in healthy smiles.
I highly value the trust and confidence my patients have placed in me and my team, and am proud to have the opportunity to care for them and their smiles.
Education and continuing education
- University of Washington – Bachelor of Arts in biology and chemistry, magna cum laude
- University of Washington, School of Dentistry – Doctorate of Dental Science
Being involved in continuing education feeds the soul. I love to learn, and keeping up to date is a high priority in my dental practice. As a result, my patients get the highest quality of care.
Annually, I attend the Ernest M. Jones Memorial Lectureship, the Pacific Dental Conference in Vancouver, the Pacific Northwest Dental Conference in Seattle, as well as several other Continuing Education Seminars.
I am a graduate of the Dawson Academy Core Curriculum on functional occlusion. My patients enjoy an emphasis on healthy and comfortable bites. Additionally, I have also been involved in dental study clubs for most of my professional career. One of the first Kois/Spear hands-on study clubs was hosted in my office! Presently, I am a member of the Premier Study Club and Puget Sound Periodontics Study Club.

The greatest passion I have in life is for the personal relationships I have with wonderful, caring people. At the center is my husband and best friend, Ernest Vogel, who is now retired from his career as an attorney. Together, we happily live in Federal Way which I have been fortunate to call home since 1964.
In my leisure time, my hobbies include ikebana (Japanese flower arranging), vegetable gardening (especially herbs, heritage tomatoes, and shell beans), cooking (new cuisine and traditional foods of many cultures), and travel (especially to visit distant countries and cultures). I also get much joy from cheering on the Seattle Mariners, appreciating a wide array of visual and performing arts, sea kayaking in the summer, and enjoying architecture and fashion.
In the community
As dental professionals, we must recognize that we are very fortunate to participate in a healing, care profession. At a time when there is high unemployment and housing foreclosures, it is especially important for those of us that have been blessed with unique skills or means to help the at-need population. In addition, it is important to support the arts, which provide beauty and a path for meaningful introspection that so enhances our lives. Consequently, I support the following:
- Artist Trust
- Federal Way Multi-Service Center
- Fusion (Friends United to Shelter the Indigent Oppressed and Needy) Federal Way
- Danny Woo International District Community Garden, Seattle
- King County Community Dental Clinics
- Union Gospel Mission
